Virginia Forest Watch

PRIVATE FORESTS

Virginia Forest Watch supports creating conditions on private land that benefit biodiversity and wildlife mobility, as well as safeguard water quality and riparian and old-growth forests. VAFW's goals on private land are to educate landowners in methods of forest conservation and sustainable/restorative forestry, to advocate for better regulation of forestry by the state, and to teach Virginia's conservation community about the importance of forest protection state-wide.

A Virginia Landowner's Guide to Sustainable Forest Management - A new website created by VAFW, dedicated to promoting sustainable foresty on private lands in Virginia is up and running. You'll find news and events relating to forest management, links to helpful sites, and a forum where landowners, forestry professionals, and conservation minded people can exchange ideas. Visit us at www.forestlandownerva.com

Logger Information List - This list is intended to give landowners background information of loggers, but says nothing about the type of forestry that they practice. A good forester will design a timber harvest to do three things: (1) make money for the landowner, (2) improve the health of the forest, and (3) protect environmental values.

Logger Notification List - This is a list provided to us by the Virginia Department of Forestry of the loggers that notify them via their "logger notification hot line" with information on jobs that they are about to begin or have just begun.

Private Logging Jobs - A list of logging jobs that have violated Water Quality Laws in your area.

Neighborhood Forest Watch - Please Let Us Know About Logging Jobs!

Managing your Woodlands - FREE from Appalachian Voices. The second edition of “Managing Your Woodlands: A Guide for Southern Appalachian Landowners” with companion DVD “Landowner’s Guide to Sustainable Forestry: Maximizing Profits While Protecting Water Quality”.

Chip Mills - Information on chip mills, which are highly-mechanized facilities that can rapidly pulverize woodlands into pulp for pressed fiberboard and paper.
